A Pleasant Surprise

by by1byrnes

I had been trying other seafood restaurants on the island after being disappointed with Hudson?s a few years back. I am happy that I have them another try. I discovered that lots had changed since my last visit. There was a new wine list with fantastic, yet reasonable selections and all the specials looked delicious. Our dining experience was perfect from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. The service was outstanding. I felt as though she was 4 steps ahead of us at all times. The food was marvelous! The blackened shrimp with a green pepper cream sauce special was great and my wife?s Shrimp Pinkie was unbelievable! I?m sorry I waited so long to give them another shot. I will be back soon and would recommend other to give it another try if they haven?t been in a while!

Amazing Seafood!

by tripptripp

Hudson?s restaurant was well worth the trip over to the north end of the island. The food was excellent. The menu offered a great variety of seafood as well as other main courses of pasta, meats, etc., soups and appetizers. Their special cocktail ?Drunken Arnold Palmer? was great. It is wonderful and refreshing. The atmosphere was nice and casual. The entire restaurant sits right on the dock and you can see the water from almost everywhere in the restaurant. We took a group of people and all ordered cocktails, wine, appetizers, entrees and desserts. Everything was great and it was extremely reasonable!

Expensive Bar Food and bad drinks

by Brunk

My husband and I went to Hudson's and got Bloody Mary's and Conch appetizers... the drinks were watery and the appetizers were just fried bread. We then ordered the fish taco's. They were ok, but not for the price. It was just fried fish in a flour tortilla.... I could have those for $5 at a local bar... I longed for the buffet we went to the night before at the Crown Plaza in Hilton Head... all you can eat seafood with crablegs and oysters! So, skip Hudson's and go to the Crown Plaza!!

  • Pros: good service
  • Cons: everything else

Not so fresh seafood, poor service, good view of water.

by siroakleysmom

The combination platter is $18.99 and had 7 small shrimp and 7 oysters. more broccoli than anything. The shrimp and oysters had no taste, like was fried in old grease. This place definitely overrated! Save your money and go somewhere else. We sat by the window and the view of water was pretty, but we could have sat on the banks and got that for free! server rushed us and brought our main dishes before we had a chance to eat our very small salad, which had lettuce, cucumbers, and one bite of tomatoe. Most disappointing. Go to the sea shack off of pope road, off the beaten path, and a mom and pop's place. only draw back is they don't serve alcoholic beverages. Food is downright DELICIOUS! We went there twice on our 6 day vacation!

  • Pros: the view of the water and boats
  • Cons: price and quality and quantity of food

A disappointment.

by moz001

Four of us decided to try this restaurant our last night in HHI. It was quite disappointing. One of the men had planned on ordering the stuffed flounder only to find they no longer carried it on the menu. The seafood platter comes broiled or fried. The guys ordered 1 of each, and both were lacking. The fried scallop wasn't cooked - yuck! My husband's 'broiled' plate was so overcooked, and tiny servings of the different items were lost. I wasn't that hungry, so I tried the Crab Rangoon. I've had better at a cheap Chinese buffet! My mother was not happy with her meal either. I wish we had talked to some locals first as we later found out that it's a tourist attraction. I wouldn't go back.

However, on a good note, the people were friendly, and our server was courteous and accommodating.

  • Pros: Nice folks
  • Cons: not so good food

Greasy seafood, poor service

by rickge1

This is a nice location by the docks. Our waitress was badly inexperienced rushing our meal by bringing our entrees while we were still eating salad. The fried seafood was undercooked and greasy.

  • Pros: Great view
  • Cons: The service and the greasy undercooked food

Best Basic Seafood Restaurant on Hilton Head

by gastronomyguru

An island stalwart since the 1960's, this venerable restaurant sets the mark for others of its ilk to aspire to. Hudsons is a basic seafood restaurant. If you are looking a french style meal with sauced fish and white table cloths, this is not the place. However, if you are looking for consistantly good basic fried, steamed and broiled seafood, this is the place. I have eaten at Hudsons numerous times in the past decades and never had a bad meal. They constanantly outshine their competion in quality, price and service. The food is always fresh and delicious. The atmoshpere is that of a casual seafood restaurant and children are welcome. Don't be fooled and go to one of their countless imatators. Hudson's is Hilton Head's best basic seafood restaurant.

  • Pros: Best Basic Seafood around
  • Cons: Crowded in summer

A no-frills island establishment on Skull Creek where you can watch shrimp boats haul in the day's catch.

by Melissa Gage

In Short
White cinder-block walls covered with buoys, enormous swordfish and nautical knickknacks probably haven't changed much since doors opened in 1967. Large windows overlook a fleet of shrimp boats working Skull Creek. A waterside deck and bar with occasional live music keep summer crowds happy while they wait. Shrimp is the menu cornerstone, but there's also fish, crab and oysters served broiled or fried. Golden fried shrimp ad plump fried oysters are standouts.

Very Disappointed!! Average food and not the best atmosphere.

by jbtdesign

We went expecting the best because of the rave reviews this place has gotten but were very disappointed. The food was not that good and you did not get very much for your money. We were not impressed with the restaurant itself or with the quality of the seafood. We may try it one more time during shrimp season to give it another chance but it is doubtful.

Two Thumbs Up

by robbie25

I don't know what restaurant you guys went to. There is a Benny Hudsons seafood down the street, but Hudson's on the docks has never served my family anything but the freshest seafood in town. There is apparently a new chef that is adding a few new, more contemporary items. When i was last there for lunch, I had a grouper sandwich that was incredibly moist and seasoned to perfection. Hudson's has always done a great job of letting the fresh ingredients steal the show. Try the Oysters Hudson, and the Appetizer sampler... they were on $40 a Day on food network with Rachel Ray. Great Value in an increasingly expensive area. TWO THUMBS UP!

  • Pros: Service, Entertainment, Fresh Seafood
  • Cons: Long Wait in summer
